1. Prepare a colored poster similar to the above photo for the June 2018 Licensure Exams for Architects Review Course of ATLAS-CPED Review Center. You may enhance the content, remove or replace some item or add some appropriate poster slogan.

4. After receipt of entry, we will post your poster in our FB page. Share the post in your timeline and ask your friends to like and share the poster (the likes and shares must be in the ATLAS-CPED fb page post). Ask those who will like your poster to also like the facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/atlascpedreview/. Any earned likes will be invalidated if no likes has been made on the ATLAD-CPED fb page.

5. A jury composed of select architects will judge the poster. The jury grade will comprise 60% of the over-all score. The other 40% of the score will be based on the number of likes and share. (1 like = 1 point, 1 share = 2 points).

6. Those who have already enrolled for the June 2018 ALE Review at ATLAS-CPED and paid their registration fees can still join the contest. Any prize earned shall be reimbursed to the winner.

CTBUH Annual International Student Design Competition

The Council on Tall Building and Urban Habitat is pleased to invite students from around the world to take part in the CTBUH 2011 Student Design Competition: Why Tall?

It aims to shed new light on the meaning and value of tall buildings in modern society from the perspectives of green, safety, and humanity.


Tall buildings are no longer just mere representations of modern cities; they are an integral part of our everyday life. They have expanded their role from providing space for commercial purposes to also include satisfying residential needs. They are fast becoming an important feat of human engineering, as they meet the growing demands of urban dwelling and reshaping the landscape of modern cities.

Now is the time to redefine the meaning and value of tall buildings in our modern society, by highlighting the aspects of green, safety, and humanity in tall buildings. In light of global climate change, public awareness of urban sustainability has forced designers to rethink and reinvent the role of the high-rise building type. They must contribute to the protection of endangered environments and offer sustainable alternatives to how cities operate.

COMPETITION OBJECTIVES
a. To promote Tropical Climate sustainable design and how this will require a different approach to temperate climatic green design incorporating innovative material use, and local climatic and community considerations.
b. Encourage students to become future leaders and experts in tropical green design.
c. Promote synergies linking architecture, interior design, engineering, landscape in an integrated whole-systems design approach.

THE COMPETITION
Green architecture and design is well established in the temperate climates. Many of these green features have been applied over here in tropical context with varying degrees of success. The challenge is thus to analyse and present green solutions that are suitable to tropical climates.
Innovative architecture is a key parameter of the design competition. Projects should focus on passive design strategies and incorporation of innovative technologies and solutions including renewable technologies where applicable. The entry must however include a degree of feasibility based on today’s available resources.
Entries can be an entire building, a detailed study or a building element (e.g. a facade study) through to a macro scale intervention, however this must relate to
the tropical climatic context, the local vernacular of the site and the site landscape. We encourage you to use your EXISTING university design work.

SIA-NParks Skyrise Greenery Awards 2011

Senior Minister of State for National Development, Ms Grace Fu, launched the 4th SIA-NParks Skyrise Greenery Awards 2011 at the unveiling of the vertical wall at 6 Battery Road on 24 March.

Skyrise Greenery is a concept that integrates green elements into the built environment. As physical living conditions become increasingly stratified, we need to look to innovative Skyrise Greenery to offer a sphere of new possibilities in our physical and social environments. It represents a vision to evolve our ever-intensifying cities into urbanscapes that are dynamic in more environmental and sustainable ways.

The Skyrise Greenery Awards aim to promote and reward greening efforts in urban developments. The Awards recognise architects taking the lead role in provisioning for green elements from the initial design stages, working in conjunction with stakeholders to bring a project to fruition.

The Skyrise Greenery Awards 2011 is jointly organised by Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA) and National Parks Board (NParks).

Objectives

The objectives of this Skyrise Greenery Awards are:

a) To promote Skyrise Greenery in urban developments by recognising the architect / owner / designer / management team who pays particular attention to Skyrise Greenery.

b) To encourage creative and original landscaping ideas in Skyrise Greenery.

c) To encourage architecture design with innovative use of greenery and landscaping to create a positive environment to live, work and play in.

d) To highlight the importance of team effort in the implementation, carrying through of design intentions and maintenance of landscaping works in Skyrise Greenery.


Participation Requirements
a) The Competition is open to architects who are Members of Arcasia Institutes or the International Union of Architects.

b) The architects shall submit details and particulars of the team involved in the project (e.g. Owners / Developers, Landscape Architect / Designer and Landscape Contract Manager) responsible for the Skyrise Greenery project.

c) The Skyrise Greenery development selected for the competition shall be a project completed between 31 July 2005 and by 31 July 2011 .

d) Entries that have previously won a Skyrise Greenery Award in the past cycles are not eligible for entry.


Submission Requirements
Each participating team may submit a maximum of three (3) entries. All entries must be accompanied by the following and must be in English:

a) Two (2) panels of A1 landscape sheets, mounted on exhibit-ready 841mm (W) by
594mm (H) white compact-foam panels of not more that 5mm thickness.

- The panels in landscape format should include a site plan demarcating the boundary

of the area to be judged. The panels should also include description of the
developer’s initiative, design concept, plant selection, maintenance method, and
photographs. Sketches may be included if deemed necessary.
- Please label board number at the back of each board.

b) One set of design reports comprising
- Reduced A3 size colour copies of the A1 boards.
- Narrative description with a minimum of font size twelve (12).

c) A CD containing soft copies of
- drawings, images and photos contained in the design report and boards,
- images of board layout, and
- photographs of the team members (preferably as a group) in high resolution jpeg / tiff
format.

The above materials are to be accompanied by a copy of the following forms:
a) Project Information Form,
b) Identification Form,
c) Entrant’s Release Form,
d) Narrative Description and
e) Receipt of Submission Form.

Where the project is carried out in association with another firm, due recognition must be accorded to the other firm. However, the participant must be the principal / main architect of the project submitted.

The boards, design reports, CD and 4 forms (Project Information, Identification Form, Entrant’s Release Form and Narrative Description) are to be placed in a clear plastic wrapper.

The Receipt of Submission Form and payment are to be separated from the other material. For payment details, please refer to Section 11.


Judging Criteria

Submissions should use appropriate photographs, diagrams or illustrations to clearly show the design approach and development wherever relevant.

All entries will be accessed by the appointed judges according to the following criteria:

a) Landscape considerations that enhance a cityscape and reflect a ‘City in a Garden aspiration with lush greenery.

b) Creative designs that integrate the building and landscape, spotting emerging trends or setting benchmarks for future projects.

c) Appropriate use of technology or innovative methods in the pursuit of sustainable building design with an emphasis on skyrise greenery, spotting emerging trends or setting benchmarks for future projects.

d) Design considerations that enable social interaction and community engagement.

e) Quality of greenery, paying particular attention to considerations such as appropriate use of plant species, enhancement of biodiversity.

Design Against the Elements Competition Winners

The winners of the Design Against the Elements (DAtE) Global Design Competition was announced today at a ceremony held at the San Miguel Coporation Headquarters in Ortigas. The Chairman of the Board of Judges announced the winners in the presence of Senator Loren Legarda and the other partners in the Competition led by the United Architects of the Philippines, the Quezon City Government, San Miguel Properties and MyShelter Foundation. The winning design will be built in Quezon City thru the initiative of Mayor Herbert Bautista and will be funded by San Miguel Properties.

Design Against the Elements 2010 Design Competition

Design Against the Elements is a global architectural design competition meant to find a solution to the problems presented by climate change. Spurred by the devastation wreaked in the Philippines by tropical storm Ondoy (Ketsana) and driven by a powerhouse multidisciplinary group of organizations from the private, institutional, and government sectors, the project aims to draw together the most innovative minds in the fields of architecture, design, and urban planning to develop sustainable and disaster-resistant housing for communities in tropical urban settings.




The winning design will be built as a prototype disaster-resistant and livable eco-village in Taguig City, Metro Manila. The village will be the first green and disaster-resistant community in the country. It will provide a model that can be studied and replicated in similar areas. The finished project will house a marginalized community living in an environmental danger zone, giving them a sense of security, ownership, and awareness of sustainability that can be practiced at all levels in their everyday lives.

The project also aims to present a definitive green building solution in a truly local context. Too often, home-owners, architects, and policy-makers think of sustainable building as a luxury that only privileged landowners and advanced countries can afford. Design Against the Elements considers green architecture as essential to survival; it has the ability to reduce the frequency and impact of environmental disasters and lessen the cycle of poverty.

Project Objectives

The objectives of the project are:

· To foster local and global awareness on climate adaptability and its relevance to poverty alleviation. Disasters are setbacks to sustainable economic growth as well as human tragedies. Having safer structures “ahead of time” will not only lead to less casualties, displacement, and damage, but will empower communities to uplift their quality of life.

· To build the first green, livable, affordable, and disaster-resistant village in the Philippines that will serve as the blueprint for other communities threatened by climate change.

· To compile an encyclopedia of climate-resilient and affordable design solutions for urban poor communities.

Design Task

The submitted design is therefore expected to address all of the following tasks:

· Develop a master plan for an urban housing development that can be applied to similar areas.

· Integrate development that addresses the sustainability of the community by understanding the local economic, social, and environmental attributes.

The design is expected to take into account the various economic, social, and environmental conditions of the community in which it will be built. The following are the criteria against which the entries will be judged.

* Disaster Resiliency

The design should be flood proof, fire proof, and earthquake resistant. It should also consider livability for residents after a disaster. It should be assumed that power, food, and clean water will be limited in some way due to flooding of the area. Transport shall likewise be hindered.

* Innovative Construction Technology

To break the cycle of destruction-rebuilding-destruction, new building technologies or approaches must be explored. The design must present innovative construction solutions, both in terms of materials (recycled, renewable, engineered, etc) and systems (structural, cladding, electrical, irrigation and plumbing, etc).

* Socio-Economic Sustainability.
o Sustainability of the Built Environment.

The design should incorporate green building strategies for both the community infrastructure and individual housing. At a minimum, the design should include the following considerations:

§ Optimal building orientation:
§ natural light
§ natural ventilation
§ Passive systems
§ Water efficiency
§ Energy efficiency
§ Indoor air quality
§ Waste management and minimization
§ Building life-cycle
§ High performance building fabric
§ Use of recycled materials
§ Use of rapidly renewable materials

o Sustainability of the Community.

In line with local building codes, 70% of the land is allocated for residential use only, while 30% is left for other uses.

§ Commercial spaces: Micro-enterprises are an integral part of urban poor communities. Space for small shops or businesses, street vending, and dry and wet markets are some of the commercial aspects which should be considered in the design.

§ Public spaces: Including in this land area are roads and other public infrastructure.

§ Social Sustainability (Community Sensitivity). While the design should be adaptable to other sites (discussed below), it should be sensitive to the local culture and way of life of the beneficiary community.

* Cost Effectiveness

The design shall be built to house a marginalized community and is thus expected to have a limited budget.

* Adaptability to Other Sites

The resulting designs are intended to serve as prototypes to build an encyclopedia of solutions for disaster-resistant design and planning. Concepts utilized in the design should be adaptable to other urban communities in tropical regions.
Program Requirements

* Housing Development

The residential structures shall be multi-story buildings without elevators, with a maximum of four (4) floors. Each dwelling unit shall conform to the requirements laid out in the National Building Code [link] and BP220, or the Guidelines for Socialized and Economic Housing [link]. Each dwelling unit shall have a floor area from 26 square meters to 32 square meters and shall include spaces for the following uses:

o Basic everyday activities, such as sleeping, eating, cooking, cleaning, and sanitation needs

o Landscaping with considerations for urban gardening.

* Community Facilities

Community facilities should likewise conform to the requirements laid out in the National Building Code [link] and BP220 [link].These should include the following:

o Community center / multipurpose hall
o School / day care center
o Waste management facility
o Public market
o Other facilities to supplement the development concepts of the entry

is open to all local and international architects, registered according to the relevant laws in their respective countries. All entrants are required to provide relevant professional registration on the registration form. Where an entry is made by a team of professionals, the team must be led by a person who meets the above criteria. That member must be indicated on the registration form as the entrant.

* Category 2

is open to all local and international students of architecture in their senior years and to graduates of an architecture degree. Student entries must have the endorsement of the school dean/head and graduate entries shall have an endorsement from an architect-mentor.

FuturArc Prize 2010: Sustainable Homes in Asia

This year, Asia's leading Green design competition, FuturArc Prize 2010, invites architectural professionals and students to share their vision of a Home for Ecological Living in Asia. The competition, organized by FuturArc Journal, is supported by the World Green Building Council and various architectural and Green building institutions in Asia and Australia, including Ikatan Arsitek Indonesia (IAI) and Green Building Council Indonesia (GBCI).

COMPETITION BRIEF: sustainableHOME@Asia a PROTOYPE for ecological living

A home is more than a house; it is a concept deeply rooted in our collective psyche encompassing physical and emotional well-being: shelter from elements, connectivity with family, community and nature, and—in a rapidly changing world—a sanctuary of sorts, recourse from uncertainty.

How we should be designing homes in Asia is far from understood. The real estate market seem to allow, with impunity, the right to transplant concepts of mass housing and lifestyle statements from one part of the world to another, leaving us socially alienated with expanding ecological footprints. We need a new mindset to craft the new Home, one that addresses old challenges and new, embraces modernity and traditions, and offers us ways of coping with change.

The FuturArc Prize 2010 seeks to find new paradigms for designing the Home, as varied as the communities, climates and cultures in which they are situated.

The competition calls for a prototype for single or multiple family units amounting to no more than 10,000 square metres in total built-up area. Site selection is at the entrant's discretion and should be explained clearly in the submission. Only sites in Australia and Asia will be considered. Registration for the competition is free. All entrants are required to register online via the FuturArc Prize 2010 competition website at www.futurarc.com/prize. TIMELINE & PRIZES

Winning entries will be determined by an international jury of Green building experts. Dr Nirmal Kishnani the jury's chair said, "The FuturArc Prize, now into its third year, has become a veritable snapshot of the region, from Hong Kong to Sydney. Last year's entries raised the question of what sustainability means to different communities: urban and rural, modern and traditional, rich and poor. This year we expect more local perspectives and solutions to what is essentially a global problem. With each successive round, the bar has been raised higher; the jury has high expectations for 2010."

THE JURY

Nirmal Kishnani, PhD, is Chief Editor of the FuturArc Journal. He is both an educator and practitioner in the area of Green buildings, presently teaching at the Department of Architecture of the National University of Singapore. He has lectured and written widely on the subject of Greening in Asia and has been a consultant to projects across the region, most recently as head of a sustainability unit operating from Singapore. Dr Kishnani is Jury Chair of FuturArc Prize 2010.

Ray Cole, PhD, is the Director of the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at the University of British Columbia and Academic Director of the School's Design Center for Sustainability. Dr Cole was selected as a North American Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture Distinguished Professor for "sustained commitment to building environmental research and teaching" in 2001. In 2003 he received the Architectural Institute of British Columbia Barbara Dalrymple Memorial Award for Community Service and the US Green Building Council's Green Public Service Leadership Award.

Peter Head, OBE FREng FRSA, is a Director in Arup (UK) where he heads a global team for planning and integrated urbanism. He is project director for the planning and development of the Dongtan Eco-city demonstrator on Chongming Island in Shanghai, and the Wanzhuang Eco-City in LangFang near Beijing. He was featured in the October 2008 issue of Time magazine, nominated as one of 30 global eco-heroes. In that same year, he was awarded the Sir Frank Whittle Medal by the Royal Academy of Engineering for his efforts to deliver an environmentally sustainable built environment. Kazuo Iwamura, M.E. is a Professor in the Faculty of Environment and Information studies at the Musashi Institute of Technology in Yokohama Japan and CEO of IWAMURA Atelier Co., Ltd. He is also Chair of ARCASIA's Committee for Green & Sustainable Architecture, UIA Councilor of Region IV (Asia + Oceania), Director of the UIA Work Programme Architecture for a Sustainable Future and a member of the board of the World Green Building Council.

Chrisna du Plessis, PhD, is a Principal Researcher at the Built Environment unit of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in South Africa. With a background in architecture she is currently concentrating on urban sustainability science at both a theoretical and technological level. She was an ad hoc spokesperson on sustainability issues for the International Council for Research and Innovation for Building and Construction (CIB), and prepared the CIB/UNEP Agenda 21 for Sustainable Construction in Developing Countries. She is a member of CIB Working Group 116 on Smart and Sustainable Built Environments and the International Initiative for Sustainable Built Environments (iiSBE).

The FuturArc Prize was launched in 2007 by the BCI Group of Companies through its publication arm, FuturArc Journal, to seek out innovative Green building designs for sites in Australasia. Designer Village Challenge 2009

The destruction caused by natural disasters such as typhoons has long been one of the major contributors to the perpetuation of poverty in developing countries like the Philippines. The suffering of the poor are amplified as climate change - reinforced storms lead to loss of life and property, and a costly halt in their way of life. They are plunged deeper into poverty when they are faced with the economic burden of having to rebuild their homes and livelihood. Many have been forced to relocate to urban centers, further congesting and expanding informal settlements. According to the Global Climate Risk Index, the Philippines is one of the ten most afflicted countries in the world in terms of the number of lives and property lost as a result of damage due to climate, and these are mainly in the form of increasing intensities of typhoons visiting the islands annually. In short, poverty and the lack of climate adaptability has proven to be a treacherous formula for poor communities.

Current mitigation and disaster management strategies are simply insufficient to shield the poor from the onslaught of the changing climate. Building disaster-resistant structures ahead of time would drastically reduce the impact of climate on poverty, bringing an end to the viscous cycle of: disaster – destruction – reconstruction. Moreover, the sense of security brought about by disaster-resistant structures would empower communities to uplift the quality of their lives as they gain more control over it. Without the fear that a storm can easily wipe away the lives that they have built, hopes and plans for the future may grow clearer and within reach.

This competition responds to the urgent need for radical adaptation. Designer Village Challenge calls for a masterplan and design of an eco-agro-tourism development for a rural community in the tropical hotspot of Camarines Sur, Philippines, a province that has repeatedly experienced catastrophic damage caused by strong tropical cyclones. The province of Camarines Sur has made it their mission to rise above it with progressive and pioneering projects that seek to alleviate the condition of its people. With the help of the global architecture community it believes that it can be an example of strength, resilience and innovative adaptability.

The top 3 winning designs will be awarded US $ 10,000, US $ 5,000 and US $ 3,000 respectively. The 1st prize winning design will be built by the Provincial Government in Camarines Sur as a prototype master planned community of 150 houses. Gawad Kalinga, the largest and most active non-government slum upgrading and rural community builders in Asia shall also build one of the winning designs. In addition, all design entries will be compiled and published into an encyclopedia of architecture and planning solutions for climate adaptability. The United Architects of the Philippines shall facilitate the competition and function as its secretariat.

The competition is open to all local and international architects, registered according to the relevant laws in their respective countries. All entrants are required to provide relevant professional registration on the registration form. Where an entry is made by a team of professionals, the team must be led by a person meeting the above criteria. That member must be indicated on the registration form as the entrant.

Bahay Pinoy Design Competition Winners announced

Winners of the "Bahay Pinoy" Bamboo House Design Competition were declared today, March 19, 2009, after three days of jury deliberations.

The winners were chosen from among 31 entries for the professional division and from 43 entries for the student/graduate category. Semi-finalist were chosen on the first day of judging and the final three chosen on the last day of judging. The sealed envelope containing the names of the winners were opened after the winning entries were chosen. (from Bahay Pinoy)

Delaware Valley Green Building Council 2009 Design Competition

The mission of the Delaware Valley Green Building Council (DVGBC) is to advance and promote sustainable and environmentally responsible planning, design, construction and operation of the region’s buildings, landscapes, cities and communities, mindful of the legacy left for future generations.

The local DVGBC Competition is part of the national U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) 2009 Natural Talent Design Competition. Participants will compete in regional competitions across the nation to become local finalists and move on to compete for a national award at Greenbuild, the USGBC’s annual Green Building Conference and Expo. Finalists’ entries will be displayed and final judging will occur at Greenbuild Phoenix in fall of 2009.

All entries must be received by May 4th, 2009 at 12:00pm.

Bahamas Design Challenge

The international “Bahamas Custom Home design challenge” architecture competition is a unique opportunity to design a multi-level detached single family home to sit on a 3¼ acre waterfront site in the Bahamas.
The competition will be held in two stages, and judged anonymously in the first stage of Schematic Design. The authors of up to six schemes will be invited to develop their design and enter the second stage for the awarding of the Commission for the design of the building.

Design Brief:
The objective of the architectural competition is the design of a 2 or 3 floor multi-generational home for a husband and wife (in their 50’s), six year old twins (boy and girl), and including two self contained guest apartments for sister-in-law, and another sister-in-law and husband (in their seventies). Additionally two ‘connected’ self contained spaces for live in employees are also required.
The design should be either, Mediterranean, Contemporary, Caribbean or a fusion of all three, while being mindful of a sub-tropic region with tropical summers. (Hot and humid from June through October, with searing sun and torrential rains, and balmy from November – May with occasional cool evenings). The architectural ‘guideline’ for the home design should be one that stimulates and delights with its unique ideas, exotic details and classic emphasis, and harmonizes indoor and outdoor living spaces.

4th International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR) "Squat City Competition"

The 4th IABR 'Open City' is committed to display projects that negotiate between the integrating and segregating forces and enable people of diverse cultures and lifestyles to connect and interact. 'Squat City' is part of the Rotterdam Biennale and deals with the increasingly common phenomenon of informal urban developments all over the world.
The projects submitted for the Squat City Competition should contribute to the agenda of the 'Open City' by proposing inventive design strategies and techniques pertaining to informal urban development.

AIA Design Ideas Competition 2009

The AIA Committee on Design (COD) invites architects, students, and allied design professionals to submit sketches to the international 2009 COD Ideas Competition, entitled “Listening to the Past, Looking to the Future: A House for Today.” In this unique sketch competition, submitters are asked to explore the legacy of modernist design, through a concept design problem.

Winners will receive funding to attend the COD Spring Design Conference in Boston and have their work exhibited at the 2009 AIA National Convention in San Francisco. Selected entries will be displayed on the AIA Web site.
